Salt River, the Pima and Maricopa community north of Mesa

Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Arizona

The settlement of Salt River sits on the north bank of the river it is named for, inside the reservation set aside for the Akimel O'odham and the Xalychidom Piipaash in 1879. Its post office opened in 1912 under the run-together spelling Saltriver, then moved to Scottsdale four years later and took the two-word name with it. The community's southern edge presses directly against north Mesa, and it kept its land while the farm towns around it turned into suburbs.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
