The Mill Avenue bridge replaces the ferry that named Tempe

Charles Trumbull Hayden ran a ferry across the Salt River here from the early 1870s, and the settlement that grew around the landing was called Hayden's Ferry before anyone called it Tempe. A steel highway bridge opened in August 1931 and carried traffic over a river that is dry for most of the year. A second span was added alongside in 1994, and the pair now frame the west end of Tempe Town Lake.
