The Hohokam canals modern Phoenix follows
1150
Pueblo Grande, Phoenix
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Hohokam dug several hundred miles of canals across the Salt River valley by hand, some of them sixteen feet deep. The settlement collapsed around 1450. Modern Phoenix canals follow the same lines, which is why the city is named for a bird reborn.
