La Casa Vieja, the ferryman's adobe where Tempe began
1873
Tempe, Arizona
Charles Trumbull Hayden ran the ferry at the Salt River crossing and built the flour mill that gave Mill Avenue its name. The adobe house he put up beside it in 1873 is the oldest occupied building in the Salt River Valley. His son Carl was born here and went on to spend more than fifty years in Congress.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
