Tempe fills the dry Salt River bed with Colorado River water

Upstream dams had left the Salt River through Tempe an empty sand channel for most of the year. The city penned two miles of it with inflatable rubber dams and filled the gap with water piped from the Colorado River by the Central Arizona Project. On 20 July 2010 a section of the western dam split and the whole lake drained back down the riverbed in a few hours.
