On 4 May 1870 the village of Astoria and the hamlets of Ravenswood, Hunters Point, Blissville, Sunnyside, Dutch Kills, Steinway, Bowery Bay and Middleton merged into a city of about 12,000 to 15,000 people, with an elected mayor and a board of ten aldermen. A. D. Ditmars won the first election that July, running as both a Democrat and a Republican. In the 1880s Mayor De Bevoise was convicted of embezzlement that nearly bankrupted the city, and Astoria petitioned to secede. Consolidation ended the whole arrangement in 1898, under its last mayor, Patrick Jerome Gleason.
