The Long Island City Courthouse and the loss of Nassau County
1874
Long Island City, Queens

The Queens county seat was moved from Jamaica to Long Island City for its transport connections, and George Hathorne's courthouse went up in 1874 to receive it. The move stayed contentious for decades and is counted among the reasons the eastern towns broke away in 1899 to form Nassau County. Peter M. Coco remodelled and enlarged the building in 1904, and it became a city landmark in 1976.
