The Queensboro Bridge opens
1909
Long Island City, Queens
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
Serious proposals to bridge the East River at Long Island City go back to 1838, and two attempts by the Queens doctor Thomas Rainey came to nothing before the consolidated city finally built one. The cantilever opened in 1909 carrying two decks over Roosevelt Island, and it is still the only toll free road crossing between Queens and Manhattan. The farm villages on the Queens side filled with apartment blocks in the two decades after it opened.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
