5 Pointz and the graffiti that won in court

A water meter factory built in 1892 was leased out as artists' studios in the 1990s and became the best known graffiti wall in the country, curated from 2002 by the artist Jonathan Cohen and named for the meeting of the five boroughs. The owner had the murals whitewashed overnight in 2013 with no warning and demolished the building the next year. In 2018 a federal judge awarded the maximum statutory damages available under the Visual Artists Rights Act, 150,000 dollars for each of 45 destroyed works.
