Hodding Carter ran a paper in the middle of the Delta that argued against the poll tax and for returning Black veterans, and won a Pulitzer for it in 1946. The Mississippi House passed a resolution censuring him as a liar. He wrote that he would let the vote stand as a compliment. Greenville has a long reputation as the most liberal town in the state, which is a relative measure.
