The Wilmington coup of 1898
1898
Wilmington, North Carolina
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Wilmington was a majority-Black city with a Black-and-white Fusionist government, Black aldermen, police and businesses. Two days after an election, a mob of some two thousand burned the office of Alex Manly's Black newspaper, killed an unknown number of people, estimates run from sixty into the hundreds, and forced the elected mayor and council to resign at gunpoint, installing their own. It is the only successful coup d'etat against a government on American soil, and it was described as a riot for a hundred years.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
