The Noguchi Museum

Isamu Noguchi bought a photogravure plant and a gas station in 1974, across the street from the studio where he had worked since 1961, and turned them into a museum for his own sculpture, stage designs, models and furniture. It opened on a seasonal basis in 1985, three years before he died, the first museum in America founded by a living artist for his own work. He spared a tree of heaven growing in the back lot and designed the sculpture garden around it. The tree was dying by 2008 and its wood was made into benches for the building.
