Alanna Heiss put a contemporary art centre into a Romanesque Revival schoolhouse of 1892, the first public school in Long Island City, which had closed in 1963 for low attendance and been used as a warehouse. The opening show in June 1976 handed the empty classrooms to 78 artists to make work for the rooms themselves. It has been affiliated with the Museum of Modern Art since 2000.
