Cherry Creek becomes Colorado's first state recreation area
1959
Aurora, Colorado
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Colorado signed a 25 year lease with the Army Corps of Engineers in 1959 and turned the flood control basin behind Cherry Creek Dam into the state's first recreation area. It drew 168,700 visitors in that first year. The park now wraps an 880 acre reservoir in prairie and wetland, with a swim beach of imported sand, 35 miles of trail, a model aircraft field and an outdoor shooting range.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
