Gauley season
1988
Summersville Dam, Nicholas County, West Virginia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
For twenty two days each autumn the Army Corps drains Summersville Lake through the dam and turns the Gauley into one of the hardest commercially run rivers in the world, a wall of class five water that people book a year ahead for. The rest of the year it is a modest mountain river. The release schedule is published like a sports calendar and the whole county's economy moves with it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
