Frank Holten State Park, the city park East St. Louis sold for a dollar
1932
Centreville Township, Illinois
East St. Louis finished this 1,080 acre park in 1932 at a cost of five million dollars, which made it the third largest municipal park in the country. The city could not afford to keep it, and in 1964 sold it to the State of Illinois for one dollar. It was renamed in 1967 for Frank Holten, an East St. Louis legislator who sat in the Illinois General Assembly for 48 years and died at 98.
