The Oregon Dunes
1972
Lane and Douglas counties, Oregon
Rebecca Kennison · CC BY 2.5 · Wikimedia Commons
Forty miles of sand rising up to 500 feet, the largest coastal dunes in North America. Frank Herbert came to write a magazine article about the grass being planted to stop them swallowing towns, never finished it, and turned what he had learned about sand and ecology into Dune.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
