Little Lake, the flood control pond Denton kept as a park

Floods in 1957 and 1962 tore through the business district around the Denton square, and the answer was a Hickory Creek basin plan that called for seventeen earthen structures to hold water back upstream. Nine were built and two of those sit inside Denton. This one, Soil Conservation Services Retarding Pond 16, went in during 1975 and was tested by heavy rain two years later. Its official name is a mouthful nobody uses, so the city calls it Little Lake and has let a park and a good deal of wildlife grow up around it.
