New York Shipbuilding, the largest shipyard in the world

The yard was meant for Staten Island, kept the name, and was built in Camden instead. It turned out more than 500 ships between 1899 and 1968, among them the cruiser USS Indianapolis, the carrier USS Kitty Hawk and the nuclear cargo ship NS Savannah. At its wartime peak it was the biggest and most productive shipyard on earth and employed tens of thousands of South Jersey workers. It closed in 1967.
