Submarine Boat Company builds cargo ships from kits at Port Newark
1917
Port Newark, Newark, New Jersey
Electric Boat set up this subsidiary in 1915 and put a shipyard on the Port Newark flats to meet wartime demand. Its method was to have other plants prefabricate roughly eighty percent of each steel hull and ship the pieces in for assembly, which is closer to an assembly line than to traditional shipbuilding. It turned out steel cargo ships from 1917 to 1922, and then the orders stopped as abruptly as they had come.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
