Sun Shipbuilding becomes the largest shipyard in the world
1943
Chester, Pennsylvania
The Pew family started this yard in 1917 to build tankers for their own Sun Oil Company, then kept it running for another sixty five years on government and commercial orders. At its wartime peak under the Emergency Shipbuilding Program it employed about forty thousand people and was the largest shipyard on earth. Chester's waterfront, its payroll and its population all grew around it. The yard closed in 1982.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
