The yard opened as Maryland Steel in 1887, the shipbuilding half of a company that made its own plate next door, which is a combination almost nobody else in America managed. Bethlehem Shipbuilding took it over in 1916 and it turned out ore carriers, tankers and warships for the next eighty years. It has changed hands and names repeatedly since 1997 and is still a working industrial waterfront.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
