The NS Savannah was the first nuclear powered merchant ship

Launched in 1959 under Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace programme, she was meant to prove that a reactor could push commercial cargo across an ocean. She cost $46.9 million, nearly $29 million of that the reactor and its fuel, and she was never economic. The government gave her a new prefix, NS for Nuclear Ship, and named her after the first steamship to cross the Atlantic. Her reactor and containment vessel were finally cut out between 2017 and 2022, and she has been laid up at the Canton Marine Terminal in Baltimore while a permanent home is found.
