New York Shipbuilding could not house the workers the war demanded, so in 1918 the Emergency Fleet Corporation put up an entire village of about 1,000 brick houses on 225 acres of old Cooper farmland. Electus Litchfield laid it out on English garden city lines with curving streets, a central square and yards front and back. It was renamed Fairview in 1922 and is one of the earliest planned communities the United States government ever financed.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
