Calship, where Terminal Island built 467 ships for the war
1941
Terminal Island, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The California Shipbuilding Corporation, known to everyone as Calship, put 467 Liberty ships, Victory ships and Haskell class attack transports into the water from Terminal Island between 1941 and 1945. At its peak it was one of the largest employers in Southern California, drawing tens of thousands of workers including many women and many Black families arriving from the South. Nothing of the yard remains.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
