Wood Lake, the first municipal nature center in Minnesota
1971
Richfield, Minnesota
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Wood Lake was a recreational lake ringed by houses until most of its water drained away in the 1950s, a loss tied to the building of Interstate 35W beside it. Richfield's council voted in 1969 to turn the remaining marsh into a nature center rather than fill it, and the building opened in 1971. Its 150 acres now carry three miles of boardwalk and trail through cattail marsh and restored prairie.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
