Gensburg-Markham Prairie, 105 acres of remnant tallgrass
1987
Markham, Illinois
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
About 105 acres of high quality sandy loam prairie survive here inside the built up south suburbs, part of a cluster of remnants the Nature Conservancy began acquiring in 1971. Northeastern Illinois University and the Conservancy manage the site together. It was made a National Natural Landmark in 1987, and the wider preserve was renamed the Markham Shkode Prairies in 2026.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
