Bluff Lake survived fifty years as a runway crash zone

Stapleton needed empty ground off the end of its runways, so 123 acres along Sand Creek sat behind barbed wire and were left almost entirely alone for half a century. When the airport closed in 1994 the land was protected under the settlement of a Sierra Club suit against Denver's aviation department over de-icing glycol washing into the creek and killing fish. The city then spent about three million dollars on habitat and trails, and the accidental refuge opened as a nature center.
