The Union Course and the great North against South race
May 27, 1823

The track opened in 1821 with the first dirt racing surface in the country, a novelty when everything else was turf. In May 1823 a reported sixty thousand people came to watch American Eclipse of the North against Sir Henry of the South, with Congress and the stock exchange closed for the day and split-second chronometers timing the heats. Eclipse lost the first heat, changed jockeys and took the next two.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
