The Guttenberg Race Track, where New York went to bet in winter

Nungesser's track ran meetings through the winter from 1885, when the New York courses were shut, and day trippers rode the ferry to Weehawken and then a streetcar up the hill to reach it. Its reputation for fixed races was bad enough that the sport's own governing body moved against anyone who rode there. New Jersey outlawed gaming in 1893 and the track died with it. The site became a small amusement ground, then a roadhouse whose clubhouse burned in 1910, and was subdivided into streets in 1919. The neighbourhood is still called the Racetrack Section.
