Jamaica Race Course, where New York racing did its everyday business
1903
South Jamaica, Queens, New York
The Metropolitan Jockey Club ran thoroughbreds here from 1903 until the track closed in 1959. Belmont and Saratoga had the society crowd. Jamaica had the working bettors who came out on the Long Island Rail Road, and for half a century it carried a large share of New York's racing days. The land was sold off after the closure and a housing cooperative was built across the infield.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
