The Coney Island Jockey Club, run by Leonard Jerome, James R. Keene and William Kissam Vanderbilt, raced here from June 19, 1880. On June 10, 1886 it opened the first turf racecourse in the United States, laid inside the existing dirt oval. The Futurity, first run in 1888, was the richest race yet run in the country. Betting was outlawed in 1908, the owners ran board track motor racing from 1915 to 1919, and the land went for house lots in 1923.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
