William A. Engeman opened a one mile track behind his Brighton Beach Hotel on June 28, 1879, bounded by Ocean Parkway, Neptune Avenue, Coney Island Avenue and Brighton Beach Avenue. James R. Keene's horse Voter set a world record mile of 1:38 flat on the dirt here in 1900. The Hart-Agnew law banned betting in 1908, the ground was turned over to motor racing as the Brighton Beach Motordrome, and by the 1920s it was housing.
