The Hudson and Manhattan Powerhouse, which lit the first tunnel under the Hudson

A first attempt at tunnelling under the Hudson began in 1874 and killed twenty men in a blowout before it stopped. William Gibbs McAdoo restarted it and finished, and on 25 February 1908 Theodore Roosevelt sent a telegram from the White House that was the signal to throw the switches in this coal-fired plant and electrify the line. It was the first rail tunnel under a major American river, and the trains still run through it as PATH.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
