Joseph Strauss, who went on to serve as chief engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge, designed this two track bascule for the Erie Railroad's main line, and it was finished in 1911 as one of the first heel trunnion bascules built in the United States. The single leaf swings up on one hinge instead of parting in the middle, which is why crews call it the jack-knife. HX stands for Hackensack Crossing. Bergen County and Pascack Valley trains still cross on it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
