Floyd Bennett Field, New York City's first airport
1931
Marine Park, Brooklyn
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The city built it by pumping sand out of Jamaica Bay to join Barren Island and its neighbours to Brooklyn, dedicated it in June 1930 and opened it to airlines in May 1931. Almost no airline used it, so it filled with record attempts instead. Howard Hughes started and finished his round the world flight here in July 1938, and Douglas Corrigan filed for California the same month and landed in Ireland. The Navy took it over in 1941.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
