The Merrimac Ferry
1844
Merrimac, Sauk County, Wisconsin
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
State Highway 113 runs down to the Wisconsin River, gets on a cable ferry, and continues on the other bank. It is the only ferry left on Wisconsin's state highway system and the only free one, it has been crossing here since the 1840s, and in summer the queue is long enough that there are ice cream stands at both ends. In winter it stops and you drive around.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
