The Berkeley Pier ran auto ferries three and a half miles out

The Golden Gate Ferry Company had to build three and a half miles out into the bay because the water off Berkeley is only seven to nine feet deep, too shallow for a ferry to reach the shore. Car ferries began running from the end of it to the Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco in June 1927. The Bay Bridge opened in 1936 and the service folded within two years, and the company handed the pier to the city. Public access was closed in 2015 on safety grounds.
