State Road A1A stops at the St. Johns River in Mayport and starts again on Fort George Island, so Florida carries the highway across on a boat. The crossing is nine tenths of a mile and runs every half hour, while the way around by road is a 28 mile detour over the Dames Point Bridge. Service has operated here since 1874, which leaves it one of the last working car ferries in the state.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
