Gustav Lindenthal's railway arch opened in 1916 as the longest steel arch span in the world and held that record until the Bayonne Bridge in 1931. It carried the first through rail route between New England and the South without a ferry, and Amtrak's Northeast Corridor still runs across it. Engineers estimate it would be the last New York bridge standing if maintenance stopped.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
