The Lowell mills
1823
Lowell, Massachusetts

The first planned industrial city in America, running raw cotton to finished cloth under one roof on water power. It was staffed by farm daughters housed in company boarding houses, who published their own literary magazine and then struck in 1834 and 1836, among the earliest organised labour actions by women anywhere.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
