The Bread and Roses strike begins at the Everett Mills

On 11 January 1912 Polish women weaving at the Everett Mills opened their pay envelopes, found them short after the state cut the legal working week, and walked off the floor. Within days more than twenty thousand Lawrence textile workers speaking dozens of languages were out with them. The strike held through two months of a New England winter and won raises across the region's mills. Robert Frost had worked in this same building years earlier.
