The Chelmsford Glass Works Long House, one of the first industrial tenements

The Chelmsford Glass Works threw up this row in 1802 to house its workers, in a place rural enough that no housing existed. The glassworks itself only made sense because the new Middlesex Canal had opened a shipping route to Boston. It is a string of Cape style houses joined into one long building and counts among the earliest industrial tenements built in the country, twenty years ahead of the Lowell mills.
