Amoskeag, the biggest mill on earth
1838
Amoskeag Falls, Manchester, New Hampshire
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
For a stretch of the late 1800s the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company was the largest cotton textile plant in the world, a brick millyard running a mile down the Merrimack with 17,000 workers and its own farms, fire department and social order. It collapsed in 1935 and the city it built had to invent itself again. The millyard survives nearly intact, refilled with colleges, startups and the lab that built the Segway.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
