The Dundee Canal made Passaic an industrial city

A dam went across the Passaic here about 1833 and a canal was cut from it between 1858 and 1861, running roughly one and three quarter miles down the west bank. The water power it sold turned a farm district into mill towns, most of all the Botany Worsted Mills that opened in 1889 and became the largest employer in the county. Rubber and paper works followed. Passaic culverted part of it in the late 1930s and the rest was filled from 1997 to carry Route 21, so the canal that built the city now runs under a highway.
