The Thebes courthouse on the bluff
1848
Thebes, Alexander County, Illinois
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A stone courthouse of 1848 standing on a bluff straight above the Mississippi, built when Thebes briefly held the county seat and the river was the road. Local tradition says Dred Scott was held in the basement, which is repeated everywhere and documented nowhere. The building outlasted the town's importance by a century and a half and still looks down on the water.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
