The Bronx Borough Courthouse, sealed for fifty years

Michael Garvin's Beaux Arts courthouse took a decade to build and served the borough's Supreme, Surrogate's and County courts until the newer county courthouse opened in 1934. The Third Avenue El ran past the front steps until the last Bronx stretch closed in April 1973. Criminal Court stayed on until 1977, when the city sealed the doors. It is a designated landmark and has stood empty ever since, sold and resold without a use being found for it.
