The Hempstead post office and its airship mural

Hempstead's post office went up in 1932 in tan, brown and red brick, Classical Revival in its massing with Art Deco lamps flanking the entrance. Inside hang two murals Peppino Mangravite painted in 1937 under the Treasury Relief Art Project. One shows the settling of Hempstead. The other shows the British airship R34 over the Hempstead Plains, where it landed in 1919 at the end of the first east to west aerial crossing of the Atlantic, carrying mail with it.
