The only true prairie east of the Appalachians once ran for forty square miles across the middle of the island, treeless grassland that startled every colonist who saw it, grazed in common, raced on, and later paved almost entirely over. A few acres survive beside a community college, and botanists guard them, because there is nowhere else in the region the plants grow.
