Lower Mills, where Walter Baker ground America's first chocolate
1868
Milton, Massachusetts
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The mill buildings on both banks of the Neponset here belonged mostly to Walter Baker and Company, the first company to make chocolate on any scale in the United States. What stands now went up between about 1868 and 1947, on a site the chocolate business had already held for a century. The complex has been converted to a mix of shops, workspace and apartments.
